I was always around music. My sister, brother, John "eljohn" Nelson and I, as children studied voice, cello and piano. My parents, both musicians, my mother, I can remember was always playing something classical on the piano or something wonderful on the record player, Streisand, Wes Montgomery etc. My father, at present singing with various classical choral groups out of Philadelphia, Mendelssohn Club, Choral Society of Philadelphia etc... As a teenager I was introduced to that wonderful music we all call jazz, by world-renowned drummer Alan Nelson. I would always make a point of being around when he would shed so I could be introduced to another horn players or vocalist's album, (Nancy Wilson, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughn. Dizzy and the likes). Later in the late 70's early 80's I began working with local R+B groups, playing the east coast circuit. Some of them included Heavy Weather, Locomotive Sound featuring Ann Byers. In the 90's I coasted back to my Jazz roots, freelancing in jazz bands with Philadelphia musicians like Bootsie Barnes, Dennis Deblasio, Sid Simmons and Monnette Sudler. Exit 45 is a great opportunity for me. I am working with a great bunch of musicians who are talented and serious about what we are doing and what we want to accomplish. We also have alot of fun doing it. |
