11 December: MP3.com CD Releases
We have released 3 Extended Play CDs on MP3.com. These are CDs that have 7 songs on each of them. The logic behind this move has to do with marketing and the method, which MP3.com pays its artist for CDs, released on their site. MP3 requires artist to relinquish 50% of the asking price for CDs, in other words if we are asking $10.00 for the CD, MP3 will take $5.00 and send the artist $5.00. Besides taking 50%, MP3.com will charge a fulfillment fee of $3.99 plus a shipping fee. So for that $10.00 CD the artist asked for MP3.com will charge the consumer $13.99 plus shipping. MP3.com will receive $8.99 for our CD and give us $5.00 for our contribution to the product. Just does not seem equitable to us. Now that you under stand the logic here is the marketing. For us to make a more equitable return for our creative works, we release 3 EPs with 7 songs apiece, ask $6.00 each. That way we receive a better percentage for each of our songs that MP3.com sells. However the loser here is the consumer. If you are reading this article and planing to purchase a Exit45 CD, buy it from one of the band members in person or from the site here. You will receive a 17 song CD for $15.00 plus shipping. Much, much better value for you hard earned money. Our fulfillment is through Cdstreet.com and they treat their artist with a lot more respect than MP3, however they don't reach the demographics, nor do they have the name recognition as MP3. So it is advantageous for Exit45 to have as much visibility as possible on the web by using as many resources as we can. Hence 3 EPs on MP3.com. P.S. There is one song on each of the EPs that is not on the U-Turn full release, extra bonus? Wednesday 1 January: Christmas CD In The Works We are planning to start recording our next release at the beginning of February. This project is going to be a Christmas CD to be released late October 2003. We are going to release a remake of "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Were going to do all 12 songs in the original order with the same arrangements as Vince Geraldi, only updated with today's recording techniques and Exit45's instrumentation. We plan to keep the same emotional character of all the songs, so they wont lose that feeling you are familiar with. We are looking forward to this project, as we are all huge Vince Geraldi fans, and who doesn't like the cartoon special "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Oh by the way there are going to be some new Charlie Brown holiday cartoon specials coming in the next few years, and David Benoit has been contracted to do the music for those specials. They should definitely be sounding good. Wednesday 1 January: Rehersals Rehearsals have been going steadily since November 1st in preparations for possible performances in the late February time frain. We rehearse twice a week in our recording studio in Willingboro, NJ. We are not rushing these rehearsals. We're taking our time to make certain that we are at our absolute best when we start performing. We opened in September 2002 for the Willingboro Jazz Festival weekend. We were not satisfied with our performance on that date, so we decided to get back in the basement and kick up the rehearsal schedule a notch. BAM!!!!!!! Wednesday 1 January: Next Full Release "The Look Of Love" Our next full release after the Christmas CD will be in the spring of 2004. We will start recording that project in the late summer of 2003. This project will have a different feel as compared to our debut release. That difference will come from the fact that we will be recording this project totally live with very few overdubs. Because of the limitations of the recording studio for the U-Turn release, we were restricted to recording everyone individually. Now That the studio is getting upgraded to a totally digital hard disk based MOTU setup running with a dual processor mac G4 with 1.5 gigs of ram and some large firewire drives, we will be able to record the whole band live. Besides the new studio setup, we will be performing live the new material for the new CD for months before we record the songs. We are looking for these new songs to be a vast improvement in feel, dynamic range and improvisational skills versus "U-Turn".
